UChicago Charter kicked of the 2015-2016 school year as a lead float in the Bud Billiken Parade. Alongside The University of Chicago and UChicago Medicine, UChicago Charter helped lead the procession of dignitaries, bands, marchers, and performers through the historic Bronzeville neighborhood and into Washington Park.

The Bud Billiken parade, first held in 1929, celebrates the start of a new school year, which begins August 17 for all UChicago Charter students. On Saturday, August 8, 2015, UChicago Charter students, parents, and staff members enthusiastically chanted, marched, stepped, and flipped their way along the parade route to show love and support for the UChicago, UChicago Charter, and greater Bronzeville community.

This annual parade--held on the second Saturday every August--is the second largest parade in the country, and the largest African-American parade in the United States. It was started by Robert S. Abbott--founder of The Chicago Defender--to give underprivileged children a day to be in the spotlight. Today, it is still run by the Chicago Defender Charities and crowns a boy and a girl king and queen of the parade.
