UChicago Charter Schools Get Healthy with Help from UChicago Medicine
Posted 04/02/2018 11:00AM

UChicago Medicine's 2017 Community Benefit Report highlighted two programs run in partnership with the Charter Schools to improve students' health and well being.

UChicago Medicine issued Asthma Community Benefit Grants during the 2016-17 school year to fund the Chicago Asthma Consortium's school-based work to improve asthma identification and education for students at the Charter Schools. The program helped screen over 1,200 students and identified over 28 students with asthma or signs of asthma. Among those identified, both students and parents received education and followup from a community health worker. Led at the Charter School by Ms. Syrennia Hanshaw, the program helped reduce the number of Emergency Department visits for participants by 83 percent.

The Charter Schools also partnered with UChicago Medicine to create the Fresh, Fit, Fun program in order to teach children, parents, and staff about nutrition, improve access to fitness activities, and help educate teachers about reducing childhood obesity. The program regularly visited Charter School campuses and offered fun ways to build healthy habits, created regular events such as Sports & Nutrition Saturdays, and also launched a healthy snack initiative while removing unhealthy snacks and beverages from school campuses.
