Technology At NKO
NKO has developed a research-based theory of action for effective use of technology to improve student achievement. Our plan is focused on systematic integration of:
- A supplementary digital curriculum of next generation evidence-based educational software to facilitate more efficient small group instruction and enable more individualized instruction and personalized learning in core academic subjects.
- Application and creativity software to facilitate development of higher-order thinking and 21st century skills such as creativity, innovation, communication, collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving across the curriculum.
- Comprehensive and transparent data to support ongoing instructional improvement by teachers, enable students to examine their progress and set learning goals and facilitate more informed parent involvement in academic and social growth.

NKO currently has two to five iMac desktop computers and a SMART Board interactive whiteboard in each classroom. The interactive whiteboards are connected to a dedicated Mac Mini computer with wireless keyboard and mouse. In addition, each classroom in grades 1-5 has a full-time mini-cart containing either 8 MacBooks or 15 iPads. We also have two mobile laptop carts and a mobile iPad cart with one device for each student in a class. These carts are shared by all classrooms on a weekly schedule. As a result, all classrooms have enough devices for daily computer use in centers or stations during literacy and math instruction as well as 1:1 access on one day each week.
