The UChicago Charter community is so proud of Beyonca Owens, who was recently awarded the Horatio Alger State Scholarship! The scholarship provides Beyonca with $10,000 towards her undergraduate education, and is specifically intended to assist high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their lives. We are thrilled that Beyonca’s integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity has been recognized and rewarded.
Beyonca is a proud leader of UCW and within the UChicago Charter community, having attended UCCS since the third grade. In each campus she’s attended, Beyonca has maintained her position as a top student and leader from middle school, where she brought home the UCW Middle School girl’s basketball team their first regional championship, to high school, where she has balanced creating and leading clubs while earning top marks in the most rigorous courses UCW provides.
“Beyonca’s passion and courage allow her to serve as community glue while simultaneously speaking truth to power. Beyonca’s willingness to speak up for her peers and ask difficult questions makes her an asset to any discussion, classroom, or campus community,” said UChicago Charter Chief College Officer Will Torres.
In addition to being named a recipient of the Horatio Alger State Scholarship, Beyonca was also named as a Gates Scholarship semifinalist earlier this school year as well as a Posse Scholarship finalist! Both The Gates Scholarship (TGS) and the Posse Scholarship are a highly selective, full-tuition scholarships for outstanding high school seniors from low-income households. Gates Scholarship semifinalists and Posse Scholarship finalists are applicants who are ideal candidates, or those who possess an outstanding high school record, consistently demonstrate strong leadership, and exude exceptional personal success skills, like our UCW senior Beyonca.
Congratulations, Beyonca! The entire UChicago Charter community is so proud of you.
